Published: Saturday, May 3, 2014 5:30 a.m. CDT

Get real world dance experience at Dance Camp scheduled July 13 to 18 at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb. The camp is for those who have completed grades 8 through 12.

Campers hone existing talents and gain new skills in the creative world of dance and enjoy daily classes in different styles of dance. Emphasis is on the pre-professional training in classical ballet and modern dance. Other classes offered will include jazz, contemporary, Pilates, yoga, repertoire, composition and improvisation.

Campers dance an average of seven hours each day in this intensive program. Faculty includes NIU dance professors, as well as guest instructors from the professional dance world. This program is for those who are serious about their training and may wish to pursue further training in a university program or other professional training programs.

Camp director July Chitwood, professor of dance and head of the Dance Program at NIU, brings many years of teaching experience to the camp. Chitwood has been a member of the Cincinnati/New Orleans Ballet Company and has been a guest artist with Momenta Dance Company and in many performances throughout Chicago. Chitwood also is a certified Pilates instructor.

Campers audition on the first day of camp and are placed in groups based on experience. Evening activities include special guest lecturers, a talent show, movie night and other events. The week culminates in an informal showing of work accomplished during the week to share with family and friends on Friday afternoon.

There is an early-bird discount deadline of June 2. More information and a registration form are available at www.artscamps.niu.edu or call the Summer in the Arts at Northern office at 815-753-1450.
