To the Editor:
From sea to shining sea, one road stretches across America and is the only such transcontinental road that is honored with a name – Lincoln Highway. It marks a first in national highway planning and construction. It carried many of the first hardtop miles that gave birth to our current highway system. It was the east-west aorta of America.
When tourists stop at Illinois oases near our boarders, one of things that welcome them are posters and guide booklets to Lincoln Highway. And, of course, Lincoln Highway is DeKalb’s main street, including a historic Boy Scout milepost and a mural.
Moving Northern Illinois University’s entrance off Lincoln Highway demotes the city of DeKalb, disparages Lincoln, and degrades this icon of American history.
Lincoln Highway is where Northern Illinois University’s entrance is and should remain.
