KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Northern Illinois senior Alex Klonowski threw his second complete game shutout of the season Sunday over Western Michigan (15-23, 6-12 Mid-American Confereence) to lead the NIU baseball team to a win over the Broncos and clinch the series, 1-0.

Klonowski fanned eight batters and surrendered one walk in 123 pitches. The victory was NIU’s second-straight win via shutout, the first time since the program was reinstated in 1991. The shutout by Klonowski tied the single season school record for shutouts in a season, set by Pat Griffin in 1981.

The Huskies (13-29-1 8-10 MAC) return to action Tuesday when it plays at Illinois-Chicago at 7 p.m. at Curtis Granderson Stadium in Chicago.

NIU softball falls to Buffalo

DeKALB – The Northern Illinois softball team suffered a 6-2 setback to Buffalo on Senior Day at Mary M. Bell Field on Sunday.

A four-run second inning by Buffalo (25-20, 9-5 Mid-American Conference) proved to be too much to overcome for NIU (20-27, 8-10) as the Huskies dropped the series to the Bulls. For the second-straight day, Buffalo pitcher Tori Speckman kept the Huskie offense at bay, holding NIU to two runs on four hits and five base on balls.

The Huskies return to the action at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, when NIU travels to play Illinois-Chicago in Chicago.

NIU women’s golf finishes fourth at MAC

FISHERS, Ind. – The Northern Illinois University women’s golf team posted its best finish in the conference championship when it took fourth at the 2014 Mid-American Conference Women’s Golf Championships at The Hawthorns Golf & Country Club on Sunday.

NIU, which came into the final round in third place, dropped a spot after shooting a final round 331.

However, the Huskies’ 945 is the lowest score for the Huskies at a MAC Championships, topping the previous best, 983, set last season.

Kent State won the event with an 895 and the Golden Flashes Jennifer Ha won the individual title with a 222.

Freshman Lena Gautier, the only Huskie to card scores in the 70s in all three rounds, took sixth after shooting a final round 79. She tied for the highest finish by a Huskie in this event (Tara Hawkins, 2002) and her 229 tops Kelsie Passolt’s 233 set in 2012 as the lowest score for an NIU golfer at the MAC Championships.
