SPRINGFIELD – An elementary school north of Chicago in Lake County has been handed a federal award for its environmentally friendly practices.

Woodland Primary School in Gages Lake is one of 48 schools across the country recognized by the U.S. Department of Education with a Green Ribbon Schools award.

The schools were selected from submissions made by state education agencies. The Green Ribbon Schools recognition award honors schools that work to reduce their environmental impact and utility costs, promote better health, and ensure environmental education.

The LEED certified school has purchased more efficient water heaters and refrigerators, installed lights that turn on only when rooms are in use and reduced water consumption.

The staff has also implemented curriculum changes to focus on the environment and students' connection to it.
