SYCAMORE – Solicitors who go door-to-door to sell items in Sycamore will now pay an added fee to conduct their business.

Sycamore City Council members voted Monday to charge a licensing fee for solicitors, peddlers and itinerant merchants on top of the fee they already were paying for a background check in order to obtain a license.

Solicitors will now have to pay $25 a day, and peddlers and itinerant merchants will pay $50 a year.

Sycamore City Manager Brian Gregory said many city departments have received phone calls questioning the legitimacy of solicitors. The city found other municipalities have fees charging them for licenses.

Once the new fiscal year starts May 1, the city will develop a program to better serve solicitors and work with the police department and clerk’s office to get the program in place, Gregory said.
