PREP ROUNDUP: DeKalb's Newport shuts out Oswego East

DeKalb sophomore pitcher Morgan Newport struck out seven hitters while giving up seven hits and walking two in the Barbs’ 9-0 win over Oswego East on Saturday.

Newport, Rachel Johnson and Taylor Garland each had two hits for the DeKalb softball team, which improved to 9-4.

Spartans swept: Stillman Valley beat Sycamore, 12-0 and 14-10.

Brooke English went 3 for 5 with an RBI for Sycamore (4-6) in Game 2. Jasmyne Taylor went 1 for 3 with a double and two RBIs, while McKenna Marcinkowski finished 2 for 5 with an RBI. Tristyn Criswell finished 1 for 2 with an RBI.

Marcinkowski was the losing pitcher in the first game, while Taylor Zak took the loss in Game 2. 
T’wolves fall:
Earlville-Leland defeated Indian Creek, 9-2. Olivia Harvell went 2 for 3 with a two-run homer for the Timberwolves.

Indian Creek is now 3-4 and 2-3 in Little Ten Conference play.

Cogs go 1-2 at tourney: Genoa-Kingston finished 1-2 at the Chicagoland Classic in Wasco, beating Harvard, 13-6, and losing to Hampshire, 15-13, and Farmington, 4-3, to finish in fourth place.

Paige Keegan went 7 for 9 on the day for the Cogs (9-6), while Baylie Ullmark was 5 for 11 with two doubles. Kendall Strack was 6 for 11 with a double and four RBIs, while Kelly Hensley finished 5 for 12 with two doubles. Dani Mathey concluded the day 7 for 12 with five RBIs.

Strack earned the win against Harvard.

Morrow throws no-no as Knights split DH: Kaneland pitcher Angie Morrow struck out six hitters while no-hitting Geneva in a 3-0 Knights win in Game 1 of a doubleheader. Morrow retired the final 16 hitters.

Kaneland (7-7) lost Game 2, 9-8.

BASEBALL

T’wolves remain unbeaten: Indian Creek topped Earlville-Leland, 14-2, in five innings to improve to 5-0.

Trevor Guerra earned the win, giving up two runs on two hits in three innings in the Little Ten Conference game. He improved to 3-0. Chris Pickwell was 2 for 3 with a double and a triple, while Tim Sommerfeld went 3 for 3 with two doubles.

Knights top Vikings: Kaneland improved to 7-3 with a 7-6 win in nine innings over Geneva. Joe Panico went 2 for 4 with two runs scored and a double for the Knights, while Ty Carlson finished 2 for 4.

Cogs go 0-2 against Winnebago: Genoa-Kingston was swept by Winnebago in a Big Northern Conference crossover two-game series.

The Cogs led 7-0 in Game 1, before losing, 9-7.

Andrew Caldwell pitched five scoreless innings allowing zero earned runs, while striking out five. Jeremy Kaleta was 2 for 3 with an RBI. Joe Murray went 2 for 4 with an RBI.

Tommy Hansen gave up three earned runs in a 6-3 Game 2 loss. Hansen struck out nine in 5⅔ innings.

Jake Langford stayed hot for GK (6-6) going 2 for 3, while Will Crozier was 1 for 3 with a double and an RBI. Hansen helped went 1 for 3 with a triple and an RBI.

BOYS TRACK

Barbs win Ottawa invite:
The Barbs won the Ottawa ABC Invitational with 183 points. Sycamore finished in sixth place with 124 points.

The Barbs won the 4x100 relay. DeKalb’s Misha Ryzhov won the 3,200-meter run in 9 minutes, 51.28 seconds. DeKalb also won the 4x200 relay.

Sycamore’s Dion Hooker won the 100 and the 200. 
Kaneland 2nd at Minooka:
Kaneland finished second at the Minooka Invite with 122 points. Ben Barnes won the long jump (20-07.5) and triple jump (41-07.25) for the Knights.

GIRLS TRACK

Kaneland third at Jenni’s meet:
Kaneland finished in third place at the Jenni’s ABC Meet in Maple Park with 302 points.

Lauren Zick won the 200-meter dash (13.06) and the long jump (16-02). 
BADMINTON

Barbs 6th at T.F. South: Tristan Draper placed third at No. 1 singles as DeKalb finished sixth out of eight teams at the T.F. South Invite. The Barbs’ No. 2 doubles team of Clara Marchini and Alyssa Wagner went 4-3. The duo finished tied for third but lost out on a tiebreaker.
