The Sycamore softball team won its Northern Illinois Big 12 East opener Thursday, 6-4 over Rochelle.

Taylor Zak was the winning pitcher, improving to 3-2 while giving up two earned runs on nine hits. She struck out eight and walked just one batter.

Brooke English went 3 for 5 with a double and an RBI for the Spartans. Paige Bjork was 2 for 3 with an RBI, while Jordyn Shultz was 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI. Tristyn Criswell went 2 for 4.

“We had runners on every inning and scored every inning from the third inning on. Continuing to put that pressure on Rochelle’s defense was a key part of those late-inning runs. We need to do a better job of finishing games,” Sycamore coach Jill Carpenter said. “Taylor did a nice job keeping her composure on the mound even though we had a couple hiccups on defense. Paige Bjork and Brooke English had a couple of key hits to give us a little breathing room. It’s always nice to start conference play off with a win.”

Sycamore is 4-4 and 1-0 in conference play.
