Prep roundup: Weaver, Haacker HRs lead Sycamore
The Sycamore baseball team defeated Genoa-Kingston, 6-2, in a nonconference game Monday in Sycamore.
Kye Schlosser pitched five innings, gave up one run and struck out four to earn the win. Zach Versluys went the final two innings to earn the save, striking out three.
Brett Weaver was 1 for 3 with a solo home run and Nate Haacker was 1 for 4 with a two-run home run for Sycamore (3-0).
“We faced a good, young Genoa-Kingston team. They are a (Class) 3A school just like we are, and they had a sophomore pitcher on the mound with a good, solid breaking ball and a live arm.”
The Cogs (2-3) were led by Jake Langford, who was 2 for 2, and Ben Graff, who was 1 for 2 with a run scored. Tommy Hansen was 1 for 3 with a stolen base.
Brady Huffman pitched four innings and struck out six, and Jeremy Kaleta threw two no-hit innings in relief.
Hawks roll: Hiawatha defeated Serena, 8-1, scoring four runs in the seventh inning to clinch the win.
Mike Mercado went 2 for 3 with two runs scored and two RBIs while Nick Doolittle also was 2 for 3 with four stolen bases. Will Corn was 2 for 4 with two runs scored, two RBIs and a stolen base in the win.
Taylor Edwards pitched five innings and gave up no earned runs to get the win while Doolittle earned the save.
T’wolves win opener: Indian Creek scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and defeated Newark, 6-4, in the Timberwolves’ season opener at home.
The Timberwolves (1-0, 1-0 Little Ten Conference) got four no-hit innings from starter Chris Pickwell, who struck out seven and gave up two runs.
David Emanuel got out of a bases-loaded jam with no outs in the seventh inning to record the save. Tim Sommerfeld was 2 for 4 with a triple in the win.
T’wolves down G-K: Indian Creek scored two quick goals in the first six minutes and defeated Genoa-Kingston, 4-2, in a nonconference match in Waterman.
Madison Spooner had a hat trick for Indian Creek (2-0) while Jordan Boyd scored the Timberwolves’ final goal. Josie Diehl made five saves.
Viviana Beltran and Nikki Hebel each scored goals for the Cogs (3-2) while Hebel also had an assist.
“We didn’t play up to our capabilities today,” G-K coach Randy Tate said.
Barbs fall: DeKalb lost to West Aurora, 10-3, in a nonconference road game.
Abby Taylor recorded two of DeKalb’s four hits.
“We committed three errors in the field and it was the first day we’ve actually played poor defensively,” DeKalb (6-3) coach Jeff Davis said.
Barbs edge L-P: DeKalb beat LaSalle-Peru, 3-2, in a Northern Illinois Big 12 matchup.
Owen Smith won in straights sets at No. 2 singles while Micah Fagerstrom and Ravi Patel won in two sets at No. 1 doubles for the Barbs (1-1, 1-0 NI Big 12). Justin Peele and Sean Connors teamed to pull out a come-from-behind win in three sets at No. 3 doubles to secure the win.
