NIU softball sweeps Western Michigan

DEKALB – The Northern Illinois softball team completed its sweep of Western Michigan with a 6-1 victory over the Broncos at Mary M. Bell Field on Sunday.

NIU (15-16, 3-3 Mid-American Conference) scored its runs late, notching a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth, another in the fifth and three more in the sixth.

The Huskies pounded out 11 hits on the day and took advantage of scoring opportunities when they were presented with them.

Shelby Miller led the way for the Huskie offense, going 2 for 3 with an RBI and two runs scored. Jessica Sturm was effective in the batter’s box as well as the pitcher’s circle going 1 for 3 with two RBIs.

Sturm allowed one run, a solo homer in the sixth, on four hits in seven innings of work.

She worked out of a little jam and some control problems in the top of the second.

The Broncos (11-14, 2-4) loaded the bases with two outs on a walk, a single and another walk. However, the junior lefty got Mackenzie Ritsema to fly out to end the threat.
