To the Editor:
I’ve had so many thoughts of our recent “winter that was” – are we through yet? How many times can we compare the depths of the snow? Our sons and their friends would have tunneled half-way to Hinckley with great joy in this year’s tonnage! Snow forts and huts abounded in the yards in other years, while the girls were busy making snow angels. Did you ever have some snow ice cream? It was big in the 30s. We took a cereal dish outside, filled it with beautiful white snow, went in the kitchen, a drop of mom’s vanilla, and yum! Ice cream. I wouldn’t do it with today’s snow, however.
We took our children to the NIU lagoon to skate, to the scout camp west of Waterman to sled on the wonderful hills, etc. Even borrowed a farmer’s pond to skate on. Memories …
Several weeks ago, after a hard Sunday snow had subsided, our niece dressed her little ones warmly at 10 p.m. and took them out for a walk to “see the beautiful world God had made.” I’m sure the streetlights shining on the millions of diamonds in the snow is something they’ll talk about for years, when they’re older. She made a memory.
Up and down our street we had massive piles of snow left by the village plows and snow movers this winter. Oh, such invitations for fun – 5-, 6-, 7-feet tall! All over town it looks the same. Guess what? I never, never saw one child out, challenged by all that fun!
My husband and I, when we could get out of our driveway (many thanks to a good neighbor!) would drive slowly around town, marveling at the amounts of snow – we never once saw children out playing.
You know where the children are, don’t you? They are in on the warm couch, cuddled up with the latest expensive gizmo that mom and dad have bought them – the kind that the only thing you have to move is your fingertips. I swear, I think 100 years from now, children will be born with fingers an inch longer than now, if that is the only thing they exercise!
I’m certainly not against education, but spring and summer are coming! Time for tree houses, soccer, softball, hula hoops, hopscotch, etc. Time for fresh air and sunshine again – let’s make some memories.
