Chicago, Moscow sister-relationship continues

CHICAGO – Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel has nixed a proposal by the City Council to show solidary with Ukraine over Russia's occupation of Crimea.

A resolution passed last week by a City Council committee asked the city's Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events to suspend the sister city agreement with Moscow. A second resolution called for solidarity with Ukraine in urging an end to Russia's occupation.

Emanuel told the City Council on Wednesday that he didn't think the city should conduct its own foreign policy.

Aldermen approved a resolution standing "shoulder to shoulder" with the people of Ukraine, but didn't act on the sister cities resolution.

Chicago Sister Cities International chairman Samuel Scott says suspending the relationship between Chicago and Moscow would only undermine a 58-year-old program that "builds bridges."
