Report: Madigan influenced Chicago transit hiring

Published: Tuesday, April 1, 2014 11:49 a.m. CST

CHICAGO — A task force appointed by Gov. Pat Quinn to scrutinize Chicago's transit agencies says it has unearthed more evidence that House Speaker Michael Madigan directed Metra to hire and promote certain candidates.

Asked Tuesday for a response to the details, Madigan told reporters in Springfield only that he hadn't had a chance to read the report since its release Monday. He added that the Legislature would consider any recommendations.

Quinn created the task force in August to suggest an overhaul of Chicago-area transit after Metra's former CEO claimed he was forced out for resisting political interference, including from Madigan.

The new report concluded Madigan recommended 26 people for jobs, promotions and raises at Metra.

According to the report, in some cases Madigan "in effect decided they were hired."
