DeKalb softball sweeps season-opening doubleheader

DeKalb softball opened its season by sweeping a doubleheader Wednesday in the Dome at the Ballpark in Rosemont.

The Barbs (2-0) defeated Huntley, 3-2, in the first game of their doubleheader. Rachel Johnson's hit in the bottom of the seventh inning was the game-winner, coming with one out and a runner on third.

Abby Taylor went 2 for 3 in the contest. Katie Kowalski pitched the first five innings and Morgan Newport closed with the final two to pick up the win.

DeKalb then defeated Freeport, 10-0, in five innings to complete the sweep. Newport, Kelsey Cooper and Taylor Warner each had two hits in the victory and Newport pitched all five innings to record the shutout.

DeKalb hosts Rockford Boylan for a double-header starting at 11 a.m. Saturday.
