ISU president's departure surprises students

NORMAL — The abrupt departure of Illinois State University's president just seven months into his job has students on the school's campus in Normal surprised.

The university's governing board accepted Timothy Flanagan's resignation during a special meeting Saturday, effective immediately. The university's vice president for student affairs, Larry Dietz, was named as Flanagan's replacement.

University officials haven't disclosed why Flanagan stepped down, although he's being investigated after a police complaint said he hit a former campus employee during an argument. He's denied any wrongdoing.

Lauren French is an ISU junior from Chicago.

She tells The (Bloomington) Pantagraph she thought an email she got about Flanagan's resignation was a joke. Some students say it won't have much immediate effect on the university, while others say they hadn't heard about it.
