Letter: Sign up now for health coverage

To the Editor:

Time is running out to join the 5 million Americans who now have the peace of mind of knowing they’re not one broken bone away from bankruptcy. March 31 is the deadline to sign up for new health insurance options made available by the Affordable Care Act though the health insurance Marketplace.

Almost 114,000 Illinoisans have signed up through the marketplace, but thousands of Illinoisans are still uninsured.

As the state director of Get Covered America, I’ve spoken to people across the state about why they’re signing up and their concerns.

Many people I speak to are worried about the cost of insurance, but what you need to know is financial help is available. In fact, 77 percent of Illinoisans who have applied have received financial assistance and according to the Department of Health and Human Services, six in 10 uninsured Americans can find a plan for $100 or less a month.

Don’t wait another day. Avoid paying a fine and sign up through the marketplace before March 31. To find an in-person assister near you who can help you enroll, visit www.getcoveredamerica.org/locator.
