Rutherford describes 'challenging' Ill. gov race

Published: Tuesday, March 18, 2014 7:33 p.m. CST

PONTIAC – Illinois Treasurer Dan Rutherford says the last few weeks on his campaign for Illinois governor have been the "most challenging of his life."

He spoke minutes after polls closed for Tuesday's primary, but didn't mention the vote and didn't offer a direct concession in the four-way primary. He instead described future political plans.

Rutherford says the last few weeks have been "horrible" after a former employee filed a federal lawsuit alleging sexual harassment and political coercion. Rutherford denies the allegations and questions the lawsuit's timing. He says his name will be cleared.

Rutherford says he'll champion the redistricting process and that he'll "be back."

The other GOP candidates are Bruce Rauner (ROW'-nur) and state Sens. Kirk Dillard and Bill Brady.

Rutherford barred reporters from his Pontiac Election night party.
