Letter: Laurie Emmer for DeKalb County Board

To the Editor:

I am writing the following letter to endorse Laurie Emmer as a write-in candidate for the DeKalb County Board. I have known Mrs. Emmer and her family for at least the past five years.

Mrs. Emmer spent 24 years active service in the U. S. Army, half the time as a medic in the 82 Airborne. During her service she was awarded the Combat Medic Badge, Expert Field Medical Badge, Jumpmaster, and Pathfinder. Before her retirement she served a tour in Afghanistan where she was awarded the Combat Medic Badge.

During Mrs. Emmer’s service she attended the advanced noncommissioned officers course and completed her BA in business administration with a concentration in accounting.

Since retiring Mrs. Emmer began her studies towards dual BA degrees in history and political science and will complete her studies May 2014.

Upon retirement she joined the Sycamore VFW, became post commander for two years and is now the 19th District junior vice commander.

Emmer is in favor of an Economic Zone. Presently 43 percent of the county revenue is generated through property taxes. Spending can only be reduced so far by cuts and effective waste reduction. To raise additional revenue taxes have to be raised OR find ways to entice industries to move into the county.

Recently the present board approved $75,000 for a consultant to lobby for an economic zone based upon key factors such as unemployment rate and poverty rate. Through an Economic zone the county can provide to corporations a cost effective reason to move their businesses into the county. Corporations move in, jobs are created, wages paid, homes built, money is spent in local stores, more tax revenue is created.

By writing Mrs. Emmer’s name in for the county board we all will have a strong advocate for fiscal restraint and providing a strong economic path in the 21st century.
