HOOPESTON – Authorities are investigating the shooting death of a 40-year-old eastern Illinois man at a small-town motel.

Vermilion County Coroner Peggy Johnson said Monday that 40-year-old Bruce L. Eldridge died after being shot Sunday night at a motel in downtown Hoopeston. Eldridge lived in the town located about 40 miles northeast of Champaign.

Hoopeston Police Chief Mark Drollinger said Eldridge was found dead in the one of the rooms after someone called to report gun shots had been fired.

Witnesses said that about the same time they saw at least two people fleeing the motel.
