Chicago officer hit in face by ricocheting bullet

CHICAGO – A Chicago police officer has been released from the hospital after he was hit in the face by a ricocheting bullet.

Police officials say the 34-year-old veteran officer was released from Northwestern Memorial Hospital early Monday. He was struck Sunday evening while trying to execute a search warrant on the city's South Side.

In a statement, police say someone inside the home fired at the officer, but the bullet ricocheted off a piece of wood before hitting him.

Superintendent Garry McCarthy says the officer is "dazed, but his spirits are good." He told the Chicago Sun-Times that the man, whose name wasn't released, had a bullet fragment in his forehead.

Authorities say six people are being questioned, but so far no arrests have been made.
