The most prolific 3-point shooter in the area proved Friday to be one of the best in the state.

Sycamore junior guard Bailey Gilbert finished in second place in the Class 3A Three-Point Showdown at Redbird Arena in Normal.

Gilbert knocked down seven 3-pointers in the final round. Pontiac’s Kelsey Walsberg hit 11 to win. Morton’s Emma Heisler also hit seven to tie Gilbert for second.

Gilbert hit eight 3s in Thursday’s preliminary round to advance to the finals.

“I felt a little pressure [Thursday], but now, coming in [Friday], I felt like it was just a fun experience,” Gilbert said. “Of course, the crowd kind of got me, but once you get into a rhythm, it’s kind of hard to get out of it.”

The second-place showing caps a stellar season for Gilbert and Sycamore. The Spartans captured their first regional championship since 2003 and won more than 20 games for the first time in more than a decade.

“I had a whole fan section of my family. I came down with my dad, and then we had another car coming with my mom and my grandparents,” Gilbert said. “They’re my biggest supporters.”
