Chicago bars pet shops from selling dogs, cats

CHICAGO — Pet stores in Chicago will be barred from selling dogs, cats and rabbits unless the animals come from shelters.

The ban approved by the City Council Wednesday is billed as an anti-animal cruelty measure aimed at the puppy mill industry. It outlaws the sale of animals from for-profit breeders.

But critics argue it will move the problem to the suburbs rather than ending it and will hurt Chicago businesses.

The Chicago Sun-Times reports that 16 pet stores in the city will have one year to make the changes, allowing them time to clear their inventory of the animals.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel said after the vote that, having grown up with three dogs, he thinks the ban "is the right thing to do."
