Letter: Is fiber optic network an untapped resource?

To the Editor:

You can’t hardly turn on Bloomberg these days without hearing how Google is bringing unbelievable data speeds over fiber optic infrastructure in a growing number of municipalities across the country.

This high-quality Google Fiber service gives consumers new choices they don’t have currently. High quality, low-cost data access also is a proven draw for new business ventures.

Twenty-first century businesses, especially farms, run on data. My impression is that the current “DATA” network is primarily serving municipal resources. I guess the sort of hypothetical question I am asking is whether this infrastructure investment could bring additional value to consumers, and possibly revenue to the county?

My guess is that the utilized bandwidth is fairly low.
