Early voting available now in DeKalb County

Published: Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2014 11:30 p.m. CDT

SYCAMORE – More options for absentee and early voting could increase turnout for March 18’s primary election. At least, that’s the hope of DeKalb County Clerk and Recorder Doug Johnson.

Early voting is available in four locations around the county, and two offer grace period voting as well, Johnson said.

“We’re trying to make more opportunities for people to vote,” he said. “Early voting is easy and more people are becoming aware of it, so the number seems to grow with each election.

Johnson said the April 2013 election saw 1,450 ballots cast early, about 11 percent of the total.

During the November 2012 presidential election, early votes accounted for 4,729, also about 11 percent, of all ballots cast.

Although registration for the March 18 primary ended Feb. 18, Johnson said grace period voting allows voters to make changes to their voter registration, such as changing their address. He said they should be prepared to vote when they make those changes.

“This is something new we’re doing this year,” Johnson said.

Grace period voting is available until March 13 during normal business hours at the DeKalb County Elections office, 110 E. Sycamore St., Sycamore.

Early voting runs from Monday through March 15. Ballots may be cast from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday; from noon to 7 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday; and from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday.

Voters from any precinct in the county may vote at the election office in Sycamore or in the Blackhawk Annex of the Holmes Student Center, 340 Carroll Ave. at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb. Grace period voting is available at those locations.

Voters in the northern portion of the county, including those in Genoa, Kingston, Franklin, Mayfield and South Grove townships, can vote at the Kirkland Village Hall, 511 W. Main St.

Voters in the southern area of the county, including Clinton, Paw Paw, Sandwich, Shabbona, Somonauk, Squaw Grove and Victor townships, can vote at the Sandwich Fire Station, 310 E. Railroad St.

Johnson urged anyone with questions to contact his office at 815-895-7147 or visit the county’s website at www.dekalbcounty.org/CoClerk.
