State wrestling roundup: Akins wins on first day

Sycamore senior Kyle Akins continued his quest for a second consecutive wrestling state championship with a win by technical fall in the preliminary round Thursday of the Class 2A state tournament at the University of Illinois’ State Farm Center in Champaign.

Akins faces Vernon Hills senior Jordan Reich in the quarterfinals at 120 pounds today.

Sycamore junior Chris Malone also won his preliminary match by a 17-3 decision to advance to the quarterfinals, where he will face Crystal Lake Central's Michael Zelasco.

Sycamore's Austin Armstrong lost a close 1-0 decision in his preliminary match. He will go through wrestlebacks. Kaneland senior Justin Diddell also lost his preliminary match.

In Class 3A, DeKalb's Ulises Jacobo, Brad Green and Jackson Montgomery also lost their first preliminary match.
