DeKALB – No one was injured in a house fire Sunday night that nearly destroyed a rural DeKalb home.

According to DeKalb fire investigator Matt Holuj, the homeowner at 8471 Country Lane called firefighters at 8:50 p.m. Sunday to report his home was on fire. DeKalb County Sheriff's police saw flames from the second story of the house when they arrived and found the homeowner moving his vehicle.

DeKalb County Animal Control officers took three cats from the home to the Malta Veterinary Hospital.

Holuj said the fire department is still investigating, but the fire appears to be accidental and possibly caused by complications with the home's fireplace. He said more than half of the $250,000 home was damaged.

The home sits southwest of DeKalb, north of Perry Road and west of Waterman Road.
