EUREKA — A central Illinois man was sentenced to 50 years in prison for the death of a 74-year-old man whose body parts were found in two counties.
Rayshawn Johnson was sentenced Thursday after he pleaded guilty to charges related to August 2013 slaying of Oakley Mitchell.
Authorities say the 23-year-old admitted he shot the Secor farmer at his home, burned and dismembered his body before dumping it into the Mackinaw River.
He was charged along with his girlfriend, Vishawn Mills, who's pleaded not guilty and is set to stand trial in March. Authorities say she helped Johnson dispose of Mitchell's body.
The two were living with Mitchell and were arrested together in Indianapolis.
Johnson apologized in court Thursday. But Mitchell's family members say they had hoped for a longer sentence.
