Ill. schools among top for Peace Corps volunteers

CHICAGO — Several Illinois universities are among the institutions that send the most volunteers to serve in the Peace Corps.

The Peace Corps on Tuesday released its annual list of the nation's top volunteer-producing institutions.

Loyola University and the University of Chicago tied for No. 16 on the list of mid-sized universities. Both schools have 18 alumni serving overseas.

The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is ranked 19th for large universities, with 41 volunteers.

Knox College in Galesburg is tenth among small universities. The college currently has 13 volunteers in the field.

Carrie Hessler-Radelet is acting director of the Peace Corps. She says the Peace Corps gives recent graduates highly sought-after skills that will help launch their careers.

March 1 is the deadline for graduating college students to apply for remaining 2014 openings.
