Women's basketball: Huskies suffer late loss to Akron

Published: Thursday, Feb. 6, 2014 5:30 a.m. CDT

Northern Illinois led Akron by three with less than 30 seconds left in the game Tuesday at the NIU Convocation Center, but the Zips went on a 5-0 run to earn a 71-67 win.

An NIU foul called in the three-point shooting motion of a made basket plus two Akron free throws with 18 seconds left lifted the Zips (13-8, 7-3 Mid-American Conference).

The Huskies (8-12, 4-6 MAC) were led by Hinckley-Big Rock grad Jenna Thorp's 13 points and 11 rebounds. Jazmine Harris had 12 points and six rebounds for NIU, while Amanda Corral added 12 points for the Huskies and Danny Pulliam finished with 11.

"We had our opportunities to win this game and we did not capitalize on the chances we had," NIU coach Kathi Bennett said, "it never comes down to just one play. We missed our share of free throws. We definitely played to win this game tonight against a good team in Akron but we have to control what we can control."
