Lawmakers to consider delaying Ill. budget address

SPRINGFIELD — A spokesman for Illinois House Democrats says Gov. Pat Quinn wants to delay his budget address.

Steve Brown is spokesman for House Speaker Michael Madigan. He says the Democratic governor has asked to lay out his budget plan on March 26.

That would be after the March 18 primary election. And it would require a tweak in the law to change it from his Feb. 19 scheduled date.

Brown says the request will appear as an amendment to pending legislation.

Quinn's budget office did not respond to a request for comment.

Quinn must wrestle with the expiration of a temporary income tax hike halfway through the fiscal year that begins July 1. His office estimates that would reduce revenues by $2 billion, forcing deep cuts or new revenue.
