Letter: Progressive tax not answer for Illinois

To the Editor:

Illinois Democrats want to change our state income tax. Democrats desire to replace the current, flat income tax with a “progressive” income tax. By definition, a progressive tax system applies higher income tax rates to higher earners.

The Democrats will have you believe that the “progressive” system is fair because people with little income will pay less in tax and those greedy rich will pay their fair share. The truth is that with our current flat rate, those in lower tax brackets pay little to no taxes already due to tax breaks.

We do not need a progressive tax! Democrats seem to have a consistent knack for figuring new ways to bring revenue to state coffers, whether it be through a “temporary income-tax increase,” gaming, or new fees.

Democrats in Springfield are now telling the public that what we really need is a new tax system that will allow increased taxes on the wealthy in order to continue the Illinois spending spree. Democrats promised us a temporary increase in our state income tax, but with that temporary increase set to end, more dollars are needed to feed the beast.

How will a progressive tax benefit Illinois taxpayers? It won’t! The current exodus from this state will be further fueled by the enactment of a progressive tax that will discourage business investment, growth, expansion, and employment.

More small businesses will flee this already hostile business climate. When you couple the progressive tax with Obamacare, some of the highest energy costs in the nation, a proposed increase in the minimum wage, and continued, unrestrained state spending, the result is disaster and a state that is a mirror image of Detroit – a once vibrant economy ruined through decades of Democrat policies.

Government must stop burdening those who earn with increased taxes. A better plan is reduce spending and thus freeze, or even lower, taxes and create a business climate that will encourage growth and job creation. When everyone has a chance to enjoy economic freedom, the result will be increased tax revenue as a consequence of expansion and job growth.

We all have to live within our means as individuals. Government should be no different. Our legislators need to be reminded that the money they spend was first earned by a voter. Until our lawmakers can demonstrate responsibility, we should not trust them with a dime more of our money.
