Route 34 expansion in Sandwich off the table

SANDWICH – Illinois Department of Transportation officials are ditching plans to expand Route 34 to five lanes in Sandwich and Plano.

State and Sandwich city officials announced they would remove the five-lane proposal from plans for Route 34 from Gletty Road in Sandwich to Chilton Way in Plano because of revised traffic projections and broad community concerns about proposed business relocations, building removals and loss of parking, according to an IDOT news release.

“IDOT recently received revised traffic projections completed in January 2014, and based on a study by the Chicago Metropolitan Agency on Planning, indicate that traffic in the U.S. 34 project area will be significantly lower by 2040 than CMAP originally calculated," IDOT Regional Engineer Paul Loete said in the release.

Officials plan to discuss other possible solutions for Route 34.

“IDOT did everything we asked of them, and we look forward to working with them on individual improvements,” Sandwich Mayor Rick Olson said in the release. “Future plans will be made with the utmost consideration as to the impact to our community."
