CARTERVILLE — A 12-year-old southern Illinois boy has drowned after falling through the ice with another boy who was rescued.

Williamson County Coroner Junior Burke tells WSIU radio that the boy was pronounced dead Sunday at 6:16 p.m. Burke says emergency crews were called at about 5 p.m. after witnesses reported seeing at least two children in cold water. He says the boys were walking on an ice-covered pond when the ice broke and they fell into the water.

Carterville Fire Chief Bruce Talley tells The Southern Illinoisan that the boy who died was under water for about 30 minutes.

The boys were not immediately identified. They were taken to Herrin Hospital. The rescued boy was being treated.

The coroner and Carterville police were investigating. Carterville is 10 miles east of Carbondale.
