GOLCONDA — A tiny southern Illinois town along the Ohio River is in the midst of a water shortage after the recent blast of freezing weather busted water pipes, draining the city's two water tanks.
Golconda Mayor Jon Broadway says the 650-resident Pope County seat is under a directive to boil any water they do use for cooking.
He says one of the town's water tanks is beginning to refill, and he's hopeful water service will be restored within days.
Water in Golconda has been available intermittently since the problem surfaced, though restaurants have closed because of the shortage.
The two water towers together can hold 350,000 gallons of water.
