CHAMPAIGN — Road crews across Illinois are working to fill potholes that have popped up on roads after last week's blast of winter weather.
The (Champaign) News-Gazette reports workers in Urbana are heading out Monday to begin filling the worst potholes on major roads in the community.
And in Chicago, road crews are in the midst of a seven-day push to restore streets after last week's record-low temperatures, snow and ice.
Potholes can be created when water seeps into cracks in a road and freezes, which causes the pavement to expand. And the brittle roads can also be damaged by heavy equipment like snowplows.
Chicago officials say Department of Transportation workers have fixed 20,000 potholes so far this year. In 2013, CDOT crews repaired more than 625,000 potholes.
