ROCK ISLAND — Western Illinois college administrators are considering whether to create a small, armed campus police force.
The Rock Island Argus reports the proposed police department at Augustana College would supplement the school's existing security officers.
The ultimate decision to create a police force falls to trustees at the 2,500-student school. If it is created, the three-member department would likely be in place by August.
Evelyn Campbell is dean and vice president of student life at the Rock Island school. She says administrators are also debating what powers the officers would have. They'd be armed with handguns.
The school's public safety officers aren't armed and don't have police powers.
She says officials began considering the idea following campus shootings at other universities across the country.
