DeKALB – The 19-year-old DeKalb man who fired a shot during a fight in the DeKalb Travel Inn's parking lot pleaded guilty Tuesday to aggravated discharge of a firearm.

Aaron J. Harris, 19, of the 800 block of W. Taylor St., DeKalb, was sentenced to three years of probation and 79 days in jail. He will get credit for the 51 days he has already served in jail. He also was ordered not to consume alcohol while on probation.

The fight began after Bryce A. Meinert, 20, of Freeport, took marijuana from Julio A. Martinez, 20, of Zion, without paying for it, court records show. Martinez contacted about five other men, including Harris, to go to the Travel Inn, 1116 W. Lincoln Highway, to confront Meinert, court records show.

Words were exchanged between the men when Harris allegedly showed his handgun in his waistband, court records show. One of the group's dogs was let loose and chased Tyrone M. Sally, 19, of DeKalb, court records show.

About two seconds after Sally began running, Harris fired a gunshot towards the dog and several people around the dog, court records show. The bullet struck no one.

Sally was charged with mob action, while Martinez was charged with delivery of marijuana near a school and Meinert was charged with misdemeanor theft. Several others were charged with mob action.

Both Sally and Martinez's next court dates are scheduled for Jan. 16.
