Village relieves officer of duty; forgery alleged

ELMWOOD PARK – A police sergeant in Elmwood Park is on paid administrative leave during an investigation of an allegedly forged $20,000 check from the account of an elderly man with dementia.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported Elmwood Park Police Sgt. John Wasilenko was named in a citation to discover assets filed by Cook County Public Guardian Robert F. Harris.

The citation alleges Wasilenko befriended an 85-year-old man after investigating a report of theft at his home. The elderly man’s bank later reported a $20,000 check had been written on his account payable to the sergeant.

Elmwood Park Police Chief Frank Fagiano issued a statement detailing the allegations and announcing Wasilenko had been relieved of duty.
