Letter: Support monarch butterfly habitat

Published: Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2013 5:30 a.m. CDT

To the Editor:

The Dec. 21 issue of the New York Times includes an article about the plight of monarch butterflies. Monarchs rely on milkweeds for their survival, but due to expanding farm lands, milkweeds and monarchs are starkly declining.

I’m happy to see that the monarch butterfly is already the Illinois State Insect. Plantings of milkweeds are needed to help this much-loved beauty of nature survive.

It would be immensely popular if the State recognized efforts to help the monarchs with awards for milkweed plantings such as to a “Monarch Friendly Village,” “Monarch Friendly School,” and “Monarch Friendly Park District.”

I urge state Rep. Robert Pritchard and others in Springfield to sponsor such awards.
