Sycamore is the place to be for the holidays

To the Editor:

Tis’ the season! The purpose of my letter is to let you know how much I love the holiday season and the many events that happen in Sycamore during this time of year. These festive events shared by many residents make me proud to live here.

After Thanksgiving and the downtown is decorated, one of the first events of the season is the free movie provided by the Sycamore Theatre. After the movie, the children are greeted on State Street by a delightful surprise. Santa and Mrs. Claus arrive on the fire truck and prepare for the Santa walk through downtown to the courthouse. Upon arrival at the courthouse, Santa speaks to the children. There is a countdown and then the lighting of the courthouse trees. The lighting of the trees is spectacular and brightens the downtown as we all wait for Christmas.

After the tree-lighting, Mr. Claus opens his house to everyone. Children and families come to see Santa, providing him with their wishes for Christmas. Families sometimes take advantage of this opportunity to take photos for the family Christmas cards. Children that are unable to see Santa can leave letters in an outside mailbox, but the Santa house is available throughout the holiday season. It is a child’s wish after seeing Santa that their hopeful Christmas wishes comes true. I have personally gone to see Santa in his Sycamore house on many occasions over the years and my wishes have almost always come true.

Another fun event that makes the holiday season so much fun is the discounted holiday movies provided by the Sycamore Theatre. Some of the movies shown over the years have been: “Polar Express,” “White Christmas,” “It’s a Wonderful Life” and “Christmas Vacation,” to name a few. I have had the pleasure of going to see some of these movies and enjoyed them with friends during the holiday season.

Living in Sycamore during the holiday season has given me wonderful memories. Who would not love this time of year when you live in a safe and festive community with so many fun and memorable things to take part in of during the holidays? There are many other events provided and available to the community. Like me, I hope you can find some events that you can take advantage of during this holiday season.

Happy holidays to all!
