Illinois hospital agrees to pay $10,000 state fine

BELLEVILLE – A southwestern Illinois hospital has agreed to pay a $10,000 state fine in response to allegations it failed to properly store hazardous waste.

The settlement stems from a 2011 inspection of St. Elizabeth Hospital in Belleville that was conducted by the state’s environmental agency.

St. Elizabeth spokesman Jim Krohn said state officials notified the hospital in 2011 of technical violations in how waste materials that are byproducts from medical procedures were labeled and stored.

Krohn told the Belleville News-Democrat that patients, hospital staff and the general public were never at risk. He said the hospital immediately got to work with state officials to address the matter.

The hospital also allegedly did not have a plan in the event that a fire or other disaster released hazardous waste.
