Governor to attend Chicago memorial for Mandela

CHICAGO – Gov. Pat Quinn is among those who are expected to attend an evening memorial service for former South African President Nelson Mandela.

The event on Chicago’s South Side is being organized by the South African consulate and will be held at the Rev. Jesse Jackson’s Rainbow PUSH Coalition.

Organizers said the memorial service will be “celebrating the life and service” of Mandela, who died at age 95.

The agenda includes prayer, song and dance.

It will feature a keynote address by the Rev. Jeremiah Wright as well as religious leaders from a variety of faiths. It’s one of a number of similar memorials being held around the country.

Chicagoans welcomed Mandela during his visit to the city two decades ago.
