Letter: Thanks to Pritchard for pension vote

Published: Saturday, Dec. 7, 2013 5:30 a.m. CDT

To the Editor:

I would like to thank Rep. Bob Pritchard for voting against the Madigan, Cullerton, Radogno and Durkin so-called “pension reform” bill. As a result of Tuesday’s vote, the U.S. and Illinois Constitutions, the rule of law, and state retirees have all become political collateral damage.

The “pension problem” created by past and current politicians is not a “pension problem.” Instead it is a revenue and spending problem.

One reason Bob gave for voting against this bill was because the annual cost savings this bill generates has not been earmarked for pension reform. Good point.

I would like to point out that the main reason we are where we are today with this pension mess, is because past and current political leaders used the pensions as a credit card. Instead of raising the necessary tax money to finance state programs and services, they used the pensions in lieu of raising taxes. And apparently, now they want to rob pensioners again, and once again apparently use this stolen money for their excessive spending habits.  Unbelievable!

Anyway, thanks again, Bob. I just wish other elected officials displayed the same courage and integrity that you did.
