A late rally wasn’t enough as Sycamore girls basketball fell to Sterling, 46-42, Tuesday in Sterling. Bailey Gilbert led Sycamore (3-2) with 21 points.
Taiya Hopkins pulled down 10 rebounds and Lauren Goff added nine points.
“We just have to learn how to play 32 minutes,” Sycamore coach Brett Goff said. “We played really well the first half and the second, not as well as we could have.”
Cogs fall: Genoa-Kingston fell, 46-37, to Stillman Valley in a Big Northern Conference crossover game at home on Tuesday.
Katie Thurlby had 10 points, Andrea Strohmaier added nine and Julie Galauner had eight in the loss for the Cogs (4-3).
“I thought we played one of our better games defensively we just had a really rough second quarter,” G-K coach Kyle Henkel said. “We’re hanging in there and I like the direction this group’s going.”
Spartans win: Sycamore defeated Byron, 66-55, at home. Devin Mottet led the Spartans with 27 points while Ben Niemann had 13 points for Sycamore.
Nick Feuerbach’s two 3-pointers at the end of the third quarter closed out a big Sycamore run after the two teams were tied at halftime.
Hiawatha gets first win: HIawatha defeated Rockford Keith, 67-55, at home for its first win of the season.
Mike Mercado had 19 points, Alex Flores recorded 16 points, Allen Letterer chipped in with 14 points and Evan Williams had 13 points for the Hawks (1-4).
“It was great all around, probably one of the best well-balanced scoring efforts I’ve seen in a long time,” Hiawatha coach Franz Schumacher said. “I can’t be more proud of how these kids are starting to turn it around.”
DeKalb falls to Rochelle: DeKalb lost all three games and the series to Rochelle, 3,607-3,430.
DeKalb was led by Seth Pinne, who rolled a 617 series and a 247 high game. Jack Berry recorded a 610 series and a 223 high game while Sean Mattingly (225) and Ranzy Collins (222) also bowled games above 220.
DeKalb’s next meet is at Ottawa on Thursday.
Kaneland edged by Sterling: Kaneland lost to Sterling, 2,652-2,511, in a Northern Illinois Big 12 crossover meet.
Christie Crews led the Knights a 523 series and a 213 high game. Dominique Lee recorded a 472 series, including a 158 game.
MONDAY’S LATE RESULTS
Sycamore downs Streator: Sycamore defeated Streator, 3,655-3,403 in a dual meet.
Brendan Fank led the Spartans with a 707 series and a high game of 246 while Alex Burchard recorded a 650 and a high game of 238.
The high game of the night went to freshman Trevor Smith with a 278.
“Our kids are bowling extremely well together, everyone supports each other and the mix of kids is fun to watch,” Sycamore coach Aaron Williams said. “This team is working so hard together with one goal in mind.”
