Danville could join chicken-friendly cities

DANVILLE – Another Illinois town is considering giving its residents the option of raising chickens within its city limits.

A few months after Champaign agreed to let people there keep chickens, Danville is thinking about following suit.

Danville Mayor Scott Eisenhauer told The News-Gazette in Champaign that a handful of people in town have asked the city to allow chickens.

The mayor said he plans to look at what other towns have done. He’ll then turn the matter over to a City Council committee.

Joyce Schmitt is one of the people who would like to raise chickens. The 83-year-old grew up on a farm in Kentucky and says she’d like to have a few now to keep her busy.

Schmitt calls the city’s current rule against chickens “a dumb ordinance.”
