Students can apply for Wally Thurow Scholarship

SYCAMORE – A Wally Thurow Scholarship Award has been established for graduating seniors at Sycamore High School.

As result of the sale of the Wally Thurow and Sycamore Pumpkin Festival history, written by Tom Oestreicher and funded by donations to the Mister Pumpkin’s Carvers Club over the past two years, enough money was accumulated to create a scholarship. Additional donations came from the Doug and Lynn Roberts Family Foundation and the Dr. John W. Ovitz Jr. family trust.

Two $500 scholarship awards will be given each May to a graduating male and female student who have overcome adversity to graduate and best exemplify Thurow’s commitment to the community.

The application form will be available in 2014 at the high school office. A panel of three will make the final selections, according to co-chairs Jerry Smith and Barry Schrader. Honorary co-chairs are Pete Johnson, Sally Stevens, Shirley Hamilton-Nehring and the late Dr. John W. Ovitz Jr.
