ROUNDUP: G-K boys basketball garners season-opening win

The Genoa-Kingston boys basketball team won its opening game of the season with a 50-35 win over Morrison on Monday in its first matchup of the Oregon tournament.

Tommy Lucca led the Cogs (1-0) with 26 points and five steals, Tommy Hansen had seven points and seven rebounds and Danny Hansen grabbed six rebounds.

“Everybody has to adjust to the new rules. You’ve still got to play with your feet and not your hands,” G-K coach Corey Jenkins said. “We’re deep enough where we can overcome some of that.”

Indian Creek gets win: Indian Creek defeated Luther North, 56-47, at the Westminster Christian tournament.

Garrett Post (23 points, 18 rebounds) and Garrison Govig (18 points, 13 rebounds) each had double-doubles for the Timberwolves (1-0).

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Cogs down Harvard: G-K defeated Harvard, 49-41, at home in its Big Northern Conference East opener. Andrea Strohmaier led with 22 points, and Courtney Winters chipped in with 10 for the Cogs (4-2).

“We really found a groove and we started getting the ball into Courtney and Andrea and good things happened with it,” G-K coach Kyle Henkel said. “Our defense is still a work in progress and if we can continue to improve that I like our chances the rest of the year.”

The Cogs (4-2) take a week off before playing Stillman Valley on Dec. 3 at home.
