A road victory at Toledo was enough for Northern Illinois to overtake Fresno State in the latest Bowl Championship Series standings released Sunday night.

NIU jumped two spots up to No. 14 in the BCS rankings while Fresno State was No. 16. NIU leads Fresno State by .0496 points with two weeks remaining in the season. Last week Fresno had a lead of .0405 points on NIU in the race for the non-AQ BCS spot.

NIU was aided by a big jump in the computer rankings that more than made up for a loss in the latest human polls. The Huskies’ overall computer ranking increased from .520 to .730.

NIU gained one spot up to No. 20 in the USA Today Coaches Poll while Fresno State jumped up three spots to No. 13 after a convincing 69-28 win over New Mexico. Fresno State increased its lead on the Huskies to 228 points, an increase of 24 points from last week.

The Bulldogs were also No. 13 in the Harris Poll, while NIU came in at No. 17. Fresno again increased its lead in the poll up to 270 points, an increase of eight points from last week.

A non-AQ team must finish in the top 12 of the BCS standings to guarantee a berth into a BCS bowl game or finish in the top 16 and ahead of a league champion from one of the automatic-qualifying conferences.

Central Florida came in at No. 19 in the BCS rankings.

NIU is No. 18 in the Associated Press Poll, which is not a component of the BCS.

NIU plays Western Michigan at home on Tuesday while Fresno State plays San Jose State on Friday.
