Prep roundup: Sycamore girls basketball wins season opener

The Sycamore girls basketball team won its season opener Thursday night, defeating Crystal Lake Central, 59-30, at the Burlington Central Tournament.

Bailey Gilbert led the Spartans with 17 points. Taiya Hopkins added eight while Julia Moll finished with seven.

“We played very well for an opening-night game I thought,” Spartans coach Brett Goff said. “Had a nice win over a 4A school.”

Royals top Wheaton Academy: Lauren Paver had 14 points for Hinckley-Big Rock in a 36-27 win over Wheaton Academy at the Tim Humes Breakout Tournament in Somonauk. Karrigan Cowan added 10 points, while Caitlin Flanigan finished with eight.

The Royals finished the tournament at 3-1.

Cogs get first win: Genoa-Kingston beat Rockford East, 57-48, at the Harvard Thanksgiving Tournament. Torri Bennett led the Cogs with 12 points, while Andrea Strohmaier and Julie Galuaner each had 11.

G-K is now 1-1 on the season.

Timberwolves fall: Rock Island defeated Indian Creek, 99-42, at the IMSA Hoop Happenings Tournament.



Barbs top Streator: DeKalb defeated Streator, 3,898-3,458 at Mardi Gras Lanes. Michael Belluzzi had a 725 series for the Barbs, finishing with a high game of 725. Will Todtz had a 707 and Sean Mattingly finished with a 672.
