Letter: Obamacare failure not surprising

To the Editor:

Are we at all surprised that Obamacare is falling apart?

Besides the widespread, well-reported failures of government yet again to be responsive to its “customers,” President Barack Obama’s “leading from behind” style has yielded nothing but mammoth incompetence.

Obama compared his web site’s dismal startup – can we call it a “startup” yet? – with Google’s and Apple’s new product launches. If Google, Apple or any company’s launches were as disastrous as the Obamacare site (still not working after two months), those companies would be memories. Those companies found success without two assets: A federal law compelling everyone to buy their products and a White House Rose Garden from which to explain that things are going great.

The law was supposed to be thoughtfully composed, debated and examined in the open. It was to be born under public scrutiny through the leadership of “the most transparent administration in history.” In reality, it was crafted in the same old smoke-filled rooms of Washington.

During the debate on Obamacare, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi told lawmakers they had to pass the bill so we could “see what’s in it.”  Well, Mr. President and former Speaker Pelosi, we’ve seen what’s in it, and we want our money back!

Recent polls have turned against Obamacare and the President himself. Everyone, including the President, agrees that he, Sen. Dick Durbin, and tons of other liberals broke a promise to allow people to keep the coverage they have. This promise was key, as many thought they would be insulated from the law if they already had insurance.

Some think the president lied; others think he didn’t know what he was talking about. Either way, he looks terrible: Either dishonest or downright incompetent.

It is unlikely that the president’s advisers overlooked a key factor at its simplest level: Obamacare mandates levels of coverage in its “Essential Health Benefits” that exceed the plans owned by millions of Americans ... plans that many Americans purchased individually to fit their own needs, budgets, and tolerance for risk. Those plans are now technically illegal.

Obama doesn’t like what those people chose, and he is much smarter than they are.  Not only will he force people to buy insurance, but he’ll force people to buy insurance they don’t want, with features they don’t need, at a price they cannot afford. Is that “change we can believe in”?
