Letter: DeKalb city workers are top notch
To the Editor:
I have lived in DeKalb since 1964 and in the past 49 years I have had many, many opportunities to interact with various city officials and departments. Occasionally, I hear people saying something negative in regards to the above people or departments and I would like to add my two cents.
DeKalb has an extraordinarily capable and efficient infrastructure that we should be proud of. For example, the other night during the horrible storm we had thrust upon us, I found the city’s street crew out chopping and shredding fallen trees, and this was minutes after the storm passed.
In the winter, the street department keeps our roads as clean as possible, as well as in the shortest time possible, after snowfalls. They do a remarkable job to say the least.
Over the years, due to the nature of my business I have had many interactions with the DeKalb Police Department and I have to say 99.9 percent of the time they are prompt, professional and efficient. I also am amazed at the level of physical fitness these officers maintain. I have never seen any indication of power or gun-happy displays of behavior. These guys are very, very dedicated and do a wonderful job.
If you really want to be impressed, read this.
After hitting a severe pothole the size of a basketball going to my house, I became aggravated and decided to call City Hall, and whomever I spoke to in the street department could not have been more friendly or helpful.
She assured me they would look into the matter. Well, imagine my surprise when less than five hours later on my way home, I drove down the same street and found the pothole repaired. I called back to thank them and was told that the head of the department himself took care of the matter. To me, that’s leadership by example.
The only, only complaint I have about the city management is as follows. We spend many millions on a new police station and a new school and various other improvements to our community. And yet those in power actually lack the common sense to authorize snow tires for our police officers. This is just insane and bad judgment in my mind and should be immediately rectified.
I respect our city and the various unsung heroes working for DeKalb.
